⑦ 현대미술과 함께 도시 강릉의 매력을 느낄 수 있는 제3회 강릉국제아트페스티벌 모습. ‘작은공연장 단’에서 하는 퍼포먼스 ‘이양희 산조’. 강릉국제아트페스티벌 제공일제강점기인 1942년 강원 강릉에 들어선 옛 함외과의원 건물. 2층짜리 벽돌집 내부로 들어서면 여러 색의 나무로 만들어진 바닥, 벽, 계단과 고풍스러운 샹들리에, 직사각형 창문이 그대로 남아 시간 여행을 떠나는 기분을 느끼게 한다. 평소엔 개방되지 않는 이곳이 현대미술 작품 전시장이 되어 관객을 맞이하고 있다. 14일 개막한 제3회 강릉국제아트페스티벌(GIAF25) ‘에시자, 오시자’는 강릉의 숨은 보석 같은 공간에서 펼쳐진다. ● 전시장으로 탈바꿈한 옛 병원과 여관
올해 강릉국제아트페스티벌은 모든 전시 장소가 걸어서 오갈 수 있을 만큼 가깝다는 점이 가장 큰 매력이다. 1957년 생겨난 여인숙인 ‘일곱칸짜리 여관’, 1958년 교회 건물로 지어졌다가 공연장으로 탈바꿈한 ‘작은공연장 단’, 강원도 유일 독립·예술영화 전용관인 ‘강릉독립예술극장 신영’ 등이 대표적이다.
명주동 가구 골목을 중심으로 전시장인 ‘강릉대도호부 관아’와 ‘일곱칸짜리 여관’ ‘창포다리’ 등은 모두 도보 10분 이내 거리에 자리하고 있다. 명주동은 1950년대 교회와 여인숙, 병원이 있는 중심지였으나, 지금은 오래된 공간을 개조한 카페나 게스트하우스가 눈에 띈다. 천천히 걸으며 특색 있는 건축물과 골목길이 있는 동네를 구경하는 재미도 있다. GIAF는 2023년 2회 전시에서도 도시의 숨은 장소를 발굴해 눈길을 끌었다. 강릉의 가장 오래된 시장인 동부시장의 옛 해물탕집, 과거 양곡창고로 쓰였던 ‘옥천동 웨어하우스’ 등이 화제를 모았다. ● 버려진 강아지, 목조각으로 살아나다
③ ‘강릉대도호부 관아’에 전시된 윤석남 ‘1,025: 사람과 사람 없이’.전시작 중에선 윤석남의 ‘1,025: 사람과 사람 없이’가 눈에 띈다. 유기견을 돌보며 살아가는 이애신 할머니로부터 영감을 얻어 버려진 강아지 1025마리를 채색 목조각으로 만들었다. 그중 367점이 강릉대도호부 관아 옆마당에 설치됐다.
그간 미술관에서 대규모 설치로 선보인 적 있지만 야외에서 보면 느낌이 색다르다. 개막 첫날부터 작품 옆에서 사진을 찍는 시민들을 여러 차례 볼 수 있었다. 홍이현숙, 흐라이르 사르키시안의 작품도 이곳에서 전시된다.
② 옥천동 웨어하우스에서 펼쳐지는 정연두의 ‘싱코페이션 #5’. 강릉=김민 기자 kimmin@donga.com미술인들이 특히 관심을 갖는 작품은 강릉독립예술극장 신영에서 상영되는 싱가포르 출신 작가 호추니엔의 영상 작품 ‘변신술사’(2025년)다. 호추니엔은 ‘변신’을 주제로 자신이 만들었던 작품 5점을 엮어 총 99분 길이로 상영한다. 어느 곳에도 속하지 않는 스파이 같은 존재들의 이야기를 감각적인 편집으로 엮었다. 이 밖에 정연두, 이양희, 서다솜, 안민옥, 이해민선, 키와림(김기훈 김들림), 김재현 작가가 전시에 참여했다.
GIAF는 지역민이 공간과 전시를 설명하는시티도슨트와 시티가이드 서비스가 운영된다. 전시 기간 일부 참여 작가들의 공연과 워크숍엔 지역민들도 참여할 수 있다. 흑표범 작가가 지난해 선보인 퍼포먼스 워크숍 ‘뱀, 물, 새의 연습’은 올해부터 지역 초등학생을 위한 교육 프로그램으로 확장, 운영된다. 전시 기획은 3회째 박소희 총괄감독이 맡았다.
페스티벌 제목은 강릉 단오제에서 하늘과 땅의 존재들을 불러 모으는 구호에서 따왔다. GIAF를 주최하는 파마리서치문화재단의 박필현 이사장은 “미술이 도시재생에도 일익을 담당할 수 있다”며 “예술을 매개로 강릉의 매력과 문화를 알리고 싶다”고 밝혔다. 4월 20일까지.
